ECM (Enterprise content management ) - is a set of technologies used to capture, store, preserve and deliver content and documents and content related to organizational processes. ECM tools allow the management of an organization's unstructured information, wherever that information exists.
ECM employed the technologies and strategies of content management to address business process issues, such as records and auditing, knowledge sharing, personalization and standardization of content, and so on.
Kofax's Document Scan Server makes deploying distributed capture simple. No software toinstall in remote locations and centralized management of the system means deployment andongoing maintenance is a snap. And with flexible tools to "scan-enable" third-party softwareapplications, Document Scan Server allows you to incorporate document capture intoexisting business processes with the same software that you use today.
Is lack of standards compliance an anti-trust issue? The Opera folks think so. Yesterday, the Norwegian browser-maker submitted an anti-trust complaint against Microsoft to the European Commission. "We are filing this complaint on behalf of all consumers who are tired of having a monopolist make choices for them," said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera Software ASA. "In addition to promoting the free choice of individual consumers, we are a champion of open Web standards and cross-platform innovation. We cannot rest until we've brought fair and equitable options to consumers worldwide."Opera CTO Håkon Wium Lie summarizes Opera's position nicely in a video at Dailymotion.com.
Prior to the introduction of the Canon DR-3080C scanner and inCHECK software, mortgage checks and deposit documents were microfilmed daily. This process took several days, and as a result microfilming provided no way to do real-time spot checks on quality nor was there any mechanism to complete a quick search of documents that were in the microfilm process. The older microfilm technology also demanded higher maintenance costs and consumable expenses. In addition, a certain amount of waste was involved when films came back of poor quality and checks had to be re-run.
Today comes news that SDL is acquiring Idiom, Inc. for US$21.7 million. Idiom was one of the first global information management systems (GIMS) to jump on the DITA bandwagon and they did it in a big way, forging partnerships with CCMS vendors Astoria Software and XyEnterprise CCMS, and authoring tools JustSystems XMetaL and PTC Arbortext Editor. While SDL's GIMS and Idiom often went head-to-head as competitors vying for content management integration, when it came to XML-based content component management, Idiom frequently won because of it's strong XML and DITA support. So in light of SDL's recent moves, SDL now supports a variety of different tools in this space: Acquisition of Tridion (web content component management system) Minority share investment in Trisoft (multichannel content component system) Acquisition of Idiom (strong support of XML-based global information management)

As the Henry Stewart DAM Conference kicks off in New York City today, CMS Watch has quite a bit to say about the state of the DAM industry, based on our research for the recently released Digital Asset Management Report 2008. As we discuss in our press release, despite the continued "on-the-cusp" feel of the DAM industry, it has yet to explode. And, frankly, we question if it ever will. DAM's growth has been more like that of a trusty, stable bond investment than a late-'90s software stock. All the better, perhaps, if DAM grows slowly but surely, even if it's a bit in the shadows. We'll blog more on the themes from our report, and this week's conference, in the coming days.

Just about every business incorporates workflow processes in its daily activities. However, it used to be that only large enterprises with lots of in-house IT support could afford the luxury of deploying automated workflow solutions. Within the past couple of years, however, workflow solutions have made their way into the midmarket. Nowadays, it's not a company's size that determines whether automated workflow is a viable option; rather, it's several other factors, which experts from AnyDoc Software, Captaris, and Optical Image Technology were kind enough to help identify. Following their advice can mean the difference between paying for software that's met with resistance and investing in a solution that provides tangible work process efficiency gains and a timely payback. Herewith some random thoughts on the first half of the 3-day AIIM Conference & Expo in Boston, MA, USA. GoogleDay One opened with a double-headed keynote. The first speaker, New York Times consumer technology columnist David Pogue, spoke about how enterprise software vendors could learn from the consumer space, particularly by maintaining a ruthless attitude towards simplicity of design. Two of his more memorable quotes: If you improve software enough times you will ruin it Wizards don't make problems easier, they just makes them longer He concluded with a broadway-inspired repertoire that you simply need to see for yourself some day. Kudos to the conference organizers for inviting him.
We like Day Software's CMS technologies, but the company's finances continue to give us pause. Day's latest quarterly results show a continuing drain of cash against rather modest reserves. Plus, their "days sales outstanding" (DSO) numbers for Q2 2002 took a serious jump, suggesting possible receivables challenges. Sure, other public CMS vendors are losing money too, but they typically can fall back on troves of cash. Day apparently cannot. If we were a Day customer, we'd want to see some evidence of tangible sources of financing beyond the usual path-to-profitability platitudes in investor-relations statements...Check out Day's Q2 Results
User stories from the knowledge frontThe Bureau of Land Management is using business intelligence software to track its budget and expenditures, as well as to measure the performance of its key programs. An agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Bureau administers 262 million acres of America's public lands. The software from Brio, being used by 7,000 employees, is said to have improved the Bureau's overall efficiency and productivity, and saved it more than $1.6 million in labor costs, according to a recent press release."It has helped us replace an unwieldy system of printed quarterly reports that took six weeks or more to prepare, print and distribute," says Lester Knutsen, president of Advanced DataTools, an IT contractor to the BLM. "The new system shortened information and report delivery from 45 days to overnight."
The content management universe today is a "3-V" world of velocity, volume, and variability. These drivers have significant bottom-line impact for product manufacturers that create, manage and publish product information used across the organization from product engineering, to marketing, sales and customer service & support. Let's explore these content drivers in more detail:Velocityâ¦The rate of information change requiring content owners to publish new or updated content and deliver it accurately, on-demand to customers is increasing.Volumeâ¦The amount of content created and published is increasing exponentially as a perpetual stream of new products and product derivatives are manufactured and sold.
