WCM solutions

ECM (Enterprise content management ) - is a set of technologies used to capture, store, preserve and deliver content and documents and content related to organizational processes. ECM tools allow the management of an organization's unstructured information, wherever that information exists.

ECM employed the technologies and strategies of content management to address business process issues, such as records and auditing, knowledge sharing, personalization and standardization of content, and so on.

Open Text said it’s a done deal. The planned acquisition of all of the issued and outstanding shares of Vignette (worth approximately US$ 321 million) has been completed late yesterday following a shareholders’ meeting where the voting and approval took place. While Vignette is busy nostalgizing, Open Text says it’s working on the strategic aspects of what may come next. Let’s not forget that Open Text already has a WCM-centric group called Open Text Web Solutions. Offering an even broader range of (quite similar) products is going to take some brain activity. Then again, this would not be the first quilting exercise for Open Text.

“The Web content management market is mature and expanding,” says Gartner’s latest MarketScope for Web Content Management (MacComascaigh, Gilbert, Bell, Shegda, Andrews). “Vendor consolidation has fallen (slowed)… functions such as workflow, ease of use and multi-site management are no longer differentiating factors; they are the norm.”   Findings:   Open source solutions (OSS, represents only 3% of the total WCM market) are increasingly stable, robust and growing in market shareWeb 2.0 phenomenon is driving WCM innovation

As the information management industry struggles to find common solutions to imaging, asset management, document management, and WCM,AIIM continues its transition to an "Enterprise Content Management" association. AIIM's 2002 conference in San Francisco -- debuting the association's more contemporary focus -- was pretty good. AIIM 2003 also looks promising. Check it out;the call for speakers is already available...Submit speaking proposals here
The slow but steady maturation of the Web CMS marketplace finds vendors continuing to develop industry-specific solutions. This phenomenon does not have the depth you would see if you were looking for an imaging and document management system, where you could find numerous resellers intimately acquainted with your industry. Nevertheless, the ongoing development of vertical WCM applications should be welcome news for solutions buyers. CMS vendor Ektron has been quietly developing specialized solutions and now has offerings for various industries, including the rather active markets in higher education and healthcare. It's probably no coincidence that Ektron has been one of the few CMS vendors to develop a significant reseller channel...
I'm very pleased to be returning to cmf2007, the "Third International Web Conference," this November. I'll be teaching on WCM, and CMS Watch is leading a track on selecting and implementing the various technologies we cover. You might be interested to know that noted guru BJ Fogg of "Persuasive Computing" and "Web Credibility" fame will be keynoting the conference and also teaching about a new framework for simplicity that he has developed. I can think of few things more important to explore in our industry than how to simplify: simplify requirements, solutions, and especially, user interfaces. Unfortunately, Fogg is teaching at the same time as me, so I'll miss his class, but you should consider it...
The acquisition was perhaps predictable, since the two companies have had a partnership for 3 years now. But neither company invested terribly much in working together and the two product sets don't closely interoperate, so to that extent the timing is a bit of a surprise. I think RedDot got a good deal: €44M in cash for a revenue stream of €15M (in 2004). For Hummingbird's part, the company needed to add a WCM solution to its product offerings, and RedDot has a growing profile, especially in North America. Prospective customers of either solution (Hummingbird's heavyweight DM and RM vs. RedDot's mid-market WCM and DM) should not expect major changes. However, existing RedDot customers should be prepared for the more aggressive upselling and maintenance negotiations that come with working with a public company.
