Is lack of standards compliance an anti-trust issue? The Opera folks think so. Yesterday, the Norwegian browser-maker submitted an anti-trust complaint against Microsoft to the European Commission. "We are filing this complaint on behalf of all consumers who are tired of having a monopolist make choices for them," said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera Software ASA. "In addition to promoting the free choice of individual consumers, we are a champion of open Web standards and cross-platform innovation. We cannot rest until we've brought fair and equitable options to consumers worldwide."Opera CTO Håkon Wium Lie summarizes Opera's position nicely in a video at Dailymotion.com.
Paul Sparta, chairman and CEO, Plateau Systems"Access to a vast data mine of knowledge is critical in today's business world--but imagine how much more strategic the mine would be if it could proactively deliver targeted knowledge to individuals based on their job roles or unique requirements, without their ever asking for it. That's where the integration of e-learning (or more precisely, learning management) and KM shows its greatest benefitâorganizations can create a true readiness platform that stores institutional knowledge and is able to automatically deliver it to individuals and groups of individuals based on their needs." Elliot Masie, CEO, The MASIE Center
With consolidation and diversification in mind, Hugh Symons began its search for a solution. Following a thorough investigation of the market for high-volume intelligent scanners, the management team short-listed three products, one of which was IBML's ImageTrac High Volume Colour Scanning Platform. User stories from the knowledge frontAs one of Germanyâs largest investment firms, Union Investment decided to stake some of its money on a more flexible IT infrastructure--one that could accommodate both old and new systems across multiple locations.Data exchange between the different IT systems at Union Investment offices in Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Zurich, Milan, Madrid, Tokyo, Budapest and Warsaw, was being handled by a custom interface program. However, the system lacked the flexibility to manage reorganizations and changes in software components. So the company turned to a enterprise application integration solution, called BusinessWare, from Vitria Technology.
Just when you thought the Java application server market was pretty well saturated (if not in actual decline), along comes a brand new entrant with familiar-sounding promises of "lighter, faster, easier." What's doubly ironic is that this new contender comes from the very folks who've done so much (intentionally or not) to make "Java appserver" a bad name in recent years. I'm talking about the people at SpringSource (purveyors of the celebrated Spring Framework). The newly announced SpringSource Application Platform is (according to its creators) "acompletely module-based Java application server that is designed to runenterprise Java applications and Spring-powered applications with a newdegree of flexibility and reliability." Spring geeks will recognize it as the long-awaited integration of Spring with OSGi. Source: www.springsource.com
